Hicks & Gellitt lose court battle

Wednesday, October 13, 2010
The High Court has granted injunctions that could open the way for the prompt sale of Liverpool.
The club's owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett asked a judge to delay the hearing of an application by creditors Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) for mandatory orders paving the way for a possible sale this week.

But the plea was rejected by Mr Justice Floyd, sitting at the High Court in London.
At RBS's request, the judge imposed injunctions on the two men requiring them to restore the original constitutions of the companies and managing directors.
This removes the final stumbling block to a £300million takeover by New England Sports Ventures (NESV), which will see the RBS recoup its original £237million loan to Mr Hicks and Mr Gillett when they bought the club in March 2007.

Mr Justice Floyd rejected applications by the owners for an injunction to halt the sale negotiations until they had attended a board meeting and there be further discussions over any sale agreement.
"I am not prepared to grant any relief," he said. "If I did it would risk stopping the sale and purchase agreement going ahead."
He said this would result in potential serious damage to the club and RBS.
Yesterday the judge heard Hicks had tried to block the NESV deal last week by removing managing director Christian Purslow and Ian Ayre from the board of the Liverpool Football Club companies.
He had then installed his son, Mack, and business associate Lori McCutcheon so that he had control of voting on the board before a meeting to decide on which bid to accept for the sale of the club.
But this was in breach of agreements the Americans signed with the bank when RBS extended it credit facilities.
The RBS loan facility ends on Friday and the bank had applied to the court for the injunction to allow the sale to go ahead and recoup its money.
The owners were refused permission to appeal.
The judge said it would be "inappropriate in the circumstances" for him to grant leave, and they would have to apply to the appeal court for permission.

"The Special One" keen to sign Zidane

Monday, October 11, 2010
Jose Mourinho is keen to add Zinedine Zidane to his team of coaching staff at Spanish giants Real Madrid.

The Bernabeu legend has won every title possible in club football with the Los Merengues and has been focusing on his role as advisor to club president Florentino Perez this term.
The three-time world player of the year has attracted the attention of Mourinho who now wants him to come onboard as a coach.
Speaking to French TV, "I would like to have him more with me and less with the president,' Mourinho, who joined Real during the close season,
"I don't think he wants to become a coach but I would still like to have him with me," said Mourinho.
Can Madrid wrestle the La Liga title away from Pep Guardiola's all-conquering Barcelona side this season?

Can Liverpool Keep Hold of Steven Gerrard?

Remember Wednesday 25 May, 2005? Sure you do. It was the day Liverpool beat AC Milan on penalties to lift the Champions League trophy for the fifth time. One of my most lasting memories from that night? Steven Gerrard saying, "How can I think of leaving Liverpool after a night like this?"
That probably produced the biggest smile I had had all evening. And despite some further drama when it seemed like a new contract wouldn't be agreed and that Gerrard would be moving to Chelsea, Liverpool's best player since Kenny Dalglish has been at the club ever since.

There were two main reasons for Gerrard's decisions to stay at Anfield.

Firstly, his love for the club which he had spent his entire career playing for. And second, his belief that the club was moving forwards under Rafa Benitez.

Now fast-forward five and a half years.

Liverpool are languishing in the bottom three of the Premier League and failed to qualify for the Champions League last season. They have been overtaken by Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in terms of ability to attract top players and are reeling after a 1-2 home defeat at the hands of Premier League new boys Blackpool. The future doesn't look quite so bright.

Today the news was released that finally—finally—a deal had been agreed that will signal the end of the Tom Hicks and George Gillett era of the club. This should go through soon, subject to Premier League approval and the end of a surely frivolous legal challenge by the American duo.

Next problem is to turn around the fortunes of the ailing club.

Key to this task will be that man Steven Gerrard.

No one has been more important to Liverpool over the last decade than the England midfielder. Gerrard is one of the very best players in the world and has shown time and time again that he has the ability to singlehandedly pull Liverpool back from the brink of defeat. But this means that he has to stay at the club.
His supreme ability rightly means that he wants to play and compete in the world's best competitions. It is this drive and ambition that almost caused him to leave five years ago. He will also be 31 at the end of the season and the clock is ticking on his illustrious career. He does not have the time to endure a long rebuilding period at Liverpool.

So what do Liverpool need to do to keep hold of their inspirational captain?
They need to do everything they can.
He is the one player the club cannot do without. Not only is he irreplaceable as a player, he is irreplaceable as an icon and as a leader.
In Liverpool's favour, Gerrard undoubtedly loves the club and loves the city. And he knows that he is adored by the Kop. But Liverpool have to show him that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I fully expect—and Liverpool fans demand—an improvement not just to the football that is being played at Anfield but also to the level of commitment being shown by the players. I feel that the end of the ownership saga will help this process.
However, Gerrard doesn't want to be playing for the sixth best team in England.
I don't think Gerrard will expect or demand the club to be challenging for a top four spot this year—although he'll be doing his uppermost to enable that—but I do think he'll expect to see strides made forwards off the pitch to ensure Liverpool's long-term competitiveness.
This means investment in a new stadium and the guarantee that there will be substantial money made available for new players. If this doesn't happen, then I think he'll leave.

And I for one would not deny him the chance to compete for the honours that his dedication and natural ability so richly deserve.

Liverpool has signed Milan Jovanovic from Standard Liege

Wednesday, February 3, 2010
The Reds have been tracking the Serbia international, who was also wanted by AC Milan, for quite some time.

The 28-year-old will sign a three-year contract reportedly worth £10million.Intially, Jovanovic had reservations about joining Liverpool as a back-up to Fernando Torres but he was convinced that he will be given a fair chance to be in the first-team next season.
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez had wanted to bring in more attacking options during the transfer window but he only managed to bring in Maxi Rodriguez from Atletico Madrid.
This deal to bring in Jovanovic will help to strengthen the striking department and also prove that Benitez's long-term future lies at Anfield.

Premier League Saturday Team News

Burnley vs Chelsea

Chelsea will be without Ivory Coast strikers Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou for the match against Burnley in the Barclays Premier League.
The pair have returned from the African Nations Cup but will not be considered for first-team duties until Chelsea visit Hull on Tuesday night.
Midfielder Michael Essien is out with a knee injury along with Juliano Belletti but coach Carlo Ancelotti has no fresh injury worries.
New signings Leon Cort and Nicky Weaver will be included in Burnley's squad.
Andre Bikey will also be included along with keeper Weaver and central defender Cort.
Graham Alexander is struggling with a calf strain but Chris McCann is hopeful of shaking off a knock on his knee.
Teams:
Burnley (from): Jensen, Weaver, Carlisle, Cort, Bikey, Edgar, Eagles, Elliott, McDonald, Fletcher, Duff, Blake, Thompson, Penny, Guerrero, Gudjonsson, Kalvenes, Eckersley, Rodriguez, McCann, Nugent, Paterson.
Chelsea (from): Cech, Hilario, Turnbull, Ivanovic, Carvalho, Terry, A. Cole, Ballack, Deco, Lampard, J. Cole, Malouda, Anelka, Sturridge, Borini, Ferreira, Alex, Zhirkov, Kakuta.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Liverpool vs Bolton
Liverpool defenders Fabio Aurelio and Philipp Degen will both miss the Barclays Premier League home clash with Bolton.
Aurelio has missed the last two matches with a minor knock while Degen (calf) did not play in the midweek goalless draw with Wolves.
However, centre-back Daniel Agger returns to the squad after regaining fitness while captain Steven Gerrard has reported no after-effects from Tuesday night when he made his comeback after a hamstring problem.
Bolton manager Owen Coyle could be tempted to name an unchanged side.
On-loan winger Vladimir Weiss may have to settle for a place on the bench while another new recruit Stuart Holden has a slight thigh strain.
Mark Davies remains absent with an ankle injury as Bolton look to build on the win against Burnley.
Teams:
Liverpool (from): Reina, Skrtel, Agger, Carragher, Insua, Aquilani, Gerrard, Lucas, Rodriguez, Riera, Ngog, Kuyt, Cavalieri, Kyrgiakos, Pacheco, Spearing, Darby, Babel.
Bolton (from): Jaaskelainen, Steinsson, Cahill, Knight, Robinson, Gardner, Weiss, Cohen, Taylor, McCann, Muamba, Lee, K Davies, Klasnic, Basham, A O'Brien, Al Habsi, Samuel, Elmander, Ricketts.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Birmingham vs Tottenham
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp will give loan signing Eidur Gudjohnsen a "week or so" to settle in at White Hart Lane so he will not feature in the match at Birmingham.
Aaron Lennon is still out with a hernia problem which the club hope to cure with physio treatment while Roman Pavlyuchenko will be out for at least a week with a groin strain.
Full-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto, meanwhile, has been cleared by a specialist to start rehabilitation on the hip problem which has kept him out since early January. With five matches in a fortnight Redknapp will decideon Saturday whether to risk Ledley King, who played against Fulham on Tuesday.
Birmingham have new £3million midfielder Craig Gardner available for the first time.
Gardner, who joined Birmingham on a four-and-a-half year deal from Aston Villa earlier this week, will be the only addition to the squad from Wednesday's 3-0 defeat at Chelsea.
Kevin Phillips is still missing with a groin problem but fellow forward Cameron Jerome is fit having suffered no reaction to his ankle injury after making his comeback against Chelsea.
Despite the defeat at Stamford Bridge, manager Alex McLeish is set to name an unchanged starting line-up.
Teams:
Birmingham (from): Hart, Carr, R Johnson, Dann, Ridgewell, Larsson, Bowyer, Ferguson, McFadden, Jerome, Benitez, Gardner, Michel, Fahey, Queudrue, D Johnson, Vignal, Maik Taylor.
Tottenham (from): Gomes, Bale, Dawson, Corluka, King, Bentley, Huddlestone, Palacios, Modric, Crouch, Defoe, Keane, Alnwick, Hutton, Bassong, Jenas, Rose.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fulham vs Aston Villa
Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has named an unchanged squad for the Premier League clash at Fulham.
O'Neill is forced to keep faith with the players on duty in the goalless draw with Arsenal in midweek because of continuing injury problems.
Left-back Stephen Warnock and striker John Carew are still ruled out through shin and knee injuries respectively, while midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker will be out for up to three months with a stress fracture to his ankle.
James Milner and Gabriel Agbonlahor are expected to be fit despite picking up knocks against the Gunners.
Bobby Zamora and Simon Davies will continue their Fulham comebacks on Saturday.
Zamora (collarbone) and Davies (foot) played some part in the 2-0 defeat by Tottenham and could start at Craven Cottage.
Andy Johnson is still struggling with a knee problem while Clint Dempsey (knee), Paul Konchesky (ankle) and John Pantsil (knee) are long term injuries.
Teams:
Fulham (from): Schwarzer, Kallio, Hangeland, Baird, Hughes, Kelly, Duff, Murphy, Gera, Nevland, Zuberbuhler, Greening, Riise, Dikgacoi, Smalling, Davies, Elm, Kamara, Zamora.
Aston Villa (from): Friedel, Cuellar, Dunne, Luke Young, Downing, Ashley Young, Milner, Petrov, Agbonlahor, Heskey, Guzan, Sidwell, Delfouneso, Davies, Delph, Shorey, Beye.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hull City vs Wolverhampton
Wolves newcomer Geoffrey Mujangi Bia is expected to shake off a tight hamstring in time for the Barclays Premier League clash at Hull.
The on-loan Charleroi wide player was unable to train on Thursday, but Wolves manager Mick McCarthy is confident he will be fit for the relegation battle.
Defender George Elokobi is also set to be in contention after suffering a bout of illness earlier in the week while striker Stefan Maierhofer has recovered from his hernia operation.
But Michael Kightly and Dave Edwards have been forced to delay their comeback from respective ankle injuries for a further fortnight.
McCarthy has to decide whether to recall striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, who was not even amongst the substitutes for the goalless midweek draw with Liverpool, or persevere with a 4-5-1 formation.
Hull talisman Jimmy Bullard will not return, but Amr Zaki is set for his Tigers debut.
Midfielder Bullard, out for almost two months with a knee injury, had hoped to feature before the end of January but is not quite ready and will not be risked.
Former Wigan striker Zaki, having moved to the KC Stadium on loan until the end of the season, is likely to be on the bench for the crucial Barclays Premier League relegation encounter.
Defender Kamil Zayatte (ankle) is doubtful having not trained this week, while Geovanni (knee) and Kamel Ghilas (thigh) have niggly injuries.
Seyi Olofinjana is still at the African Nations Cup but Daniel Cousin has returned.
Teams:
Hull (from): Myhill, McShane, Gardner, Zayatte, Dawson, Garcia, Boateng, Barmby, Hunt, Geovanni, Fagan, Mouyokolo, Kilbane, Mendy, Marney, Cairney, Ghilas, Cousin, Altidore, Vennegoor of Hesselink, Duke.
Wolves (from): Hahnemann, Zubar, Craddock, Berra, Ward, Foley, Milijas, Henry, Jarvis, Mancienne, Doyle, Hennessey, Stearman, Jones, Vokes, Iwelumo, Mujangi, Guedioura, Elokobi, Maierhofer, Ebanks-Blake.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
West Ham vs Blackburn
Blackburn's new signing Yildiray Basturk will not be in the squad for the trip to West Ham as he is not match fit.
Chris Samba returns from suspension but David Dunn (calf) misses out.
Midfielder Vince Grella is back in training following a thigh strain but is unlikely to be included in the squad.
West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola welcomes back midfielder Scott Parker and left-back Herita Ilunga.
Both players have recovered from hamstring injuries and should return to the starting line-up for the Hammers.
Fit-again England striker Carlton Cole could start after playing the last 17 minutes in the 1-1 draw with Portsmouth in midweek but Danny Gabbidon, Guillermo Franco, Kieron Dyer (all hamstring), Zavon Hines and Luis Boa Morte (both knee) again miss out.
Teams:
West Ham (from): Green, Kurucz, Faubert, Da Costa, Upson, Tomkins, Daprela, Spector, Ilunga, Kovac, Noble, Parker, Collison, Behrami, Payne, Diamanti, Stanislas, Nouble, Sears, Cole.
Blackburn (from): Robinson, Olsson, Chimbonda, Samba Nelsen, Salgado, Pedersen, Givet, Nzonzi, Hoilett, Andrews, Emerton, Dunn, Di Santo, Diouf, Kalinic, Jones, Brown, Reid, Roberts.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wigan vs Everton
Wigan could be without captain Mario Melchiot for the visit of Everton in the Barclays Premier League.
Melchiot had to come off with a neck problem in the Latics' 2-1 defeat at Blackburn on Wednesday and faces a late fitness test.
Chris Kirkland is still recovering from the collarbone injury that he sustained in training last week, so Serbian loanee Vladimir Stojkovic is likely to continue in goal.
Fellow goalkeeper Richard Kingson is still at the African Nations Cup with Ghana, but otherwise Roberto Martinez has a full squad to choose from.
Everton could be without midfielder Mikel Arteta.
The Spanish star has picked up a groin strain in training, having only just returned from almost a year out with knee damage. He has made two appearances as a substitute since his comeback.
Tony Hibbert and Jack Rodwell are still out with long-term injuries, while Ayegbeni Yakubu and Joseph Yobo are not due back from the African Nations Cup until next week.
Teams:
Wigan (from): Stojkovic, Pollitt, Bramble, Amaya, Caldwell, Boyce, Figueroa, Diame, Thomas, Gomez, N'Zogbia, Scharner, McCarthy, Scotland, Rodallega, Sinclair, Watson, Gohouri.
Everton (from): Howard, Neville, Heitinga, Distin, Baines, Donovan, Arteta, Osman, Cahill, Fellaini, Pienaar, Anichebe, Saha, Vaughan, Nash, Duffy, Coleman, Baxter, Bilyaletdinov.

Fabregas wants to beat Red Devils more than anybody else...

Cesc Fabregas has raised the temperature ahead of Arsenal's clash with Manchester United by saying he wants to beat the Red Devils more than anyone else.
Second placed United travel to the Emirates on Sunday for the pick of this weekend's Barclays Premier League games just one point ahead of Arsene Wenger's men.
Whilst a win for the Gunners - combined with a Chelsea slip at Burnley - would see Arsenal go back to the top of England's top-flight, Fabregas believes the game is far more than just another chance to win three points.
"I want to beat Man United more than anyone else," the Spain international revealed in his new column for The Sun.
"Manchester United surpasses all the other matches for me
"As a player it is the one game I really look forward to playing in every season.
"Chelsea is really good, Liverpool too and Tottenham is special, particularly for the fans who get really excited.
"But if you have to pick one game from 38 then playing against Man United is the game.
"For me it is definitely the most special game to play in the Premier League."
Fabregas has also been delighted to prove wrong the critics, who wrote off Arsenal's title chances after they were beaten 3-0 by Chelsea in November.
"They had already written us off, even before the season had started," he said.
"But we didn't care. We knew we had to react.
"We haven't lost in the league since, so it has been a very positive reaction."..
